July 2008
The New Theatre: Dublin, presented the UK Premiere of The Tailor and Ansty at the beautiful Old Red Lion Theatre: Islington for 4 weeks during July 2008.
The production was very well recieved by everyone who attended, and of course, in particular by the Irish ex-pat community.
The English critics were mistified as the to the furore caused by
the baning of Eric Cross's book in 1943, and how anyone should take
objection to its publication or its contents (where was the promised
"smut"?), when all one has to do is transfer one's mind and think back
to those years.
Culture Ireland were a most generous sponsor of our visit, which
resulted in a stress free financial climate. The work Culture Ireland
carry out is vital to the Irish Arts being recognised abroad.
The acting and direction of Nuala Hayes as Ansty and the performances of Ronan Wilmot as The Tailor were highly praised.
Our full team consisted of Mannix McPhillips - Lighting Designer, Fiona Hurley - Stage Director and Lisa Krugel - Stage Manager.
Helen Devine, Artistic Director of The Old Red Lion, was a hugely supportive spirit throughout our four-week visit.
